Glen Grant has always been a place of innovation. Like many whisky men of the early 19th century, the original Grant brothers, John and James, used to be whisky smugglers before the Excise Act made it easier to turn legit. They got their distillery licence in 1839 and with remarkable foresight, James spotted the potential of the new railways springing up over the country. He founded the Morayshire Railway Company to carry supplies from the port at Lossiemouth to Elgin. Later his nephew took over the distillery. He had the nickname “The Major” and he introduced electric lighting and a new still design and purifiers to Glen Grant. He even established a 22 acre garden to show off the exotic plants and fruits he collected on his world travels! Very innovative! Glen Grant Gordon & Macphail 1968-2008 has a nose of melon, oak, honey, cut herbs and sherry. The palate is smoky with coffee beans, brown sugar, cloves and cinnamon. The finish has curls of smoke and fruit.
