A Glenburgie single malt distilled all the way back in 1963? Yes please! The whisky matured in sherry casks for 40 long years and was bottled in 2003 by the renowned independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail for the Distillery Labels series. The range celebrates the long-standing relationship Gordon & MacPhail has with many Scottish distilleries and showcases historical label designs. In the mid-20th century, the majority of a distillery’s production was used in blends. Back then, Gordon & MacPhail produced the only official single malt bottlings for these distilleries. Glenburgie was founded in 1810 as the Kilnflat Distillery. It closed in 1870 after financial troubles, but reopened eight years later under the name Glenburgie-Glenlivet. The distillery was in the hands of the Canadian company Hiram Walker for most of the 20th century. Hiram Walker was bought by Allied Lyons in 1987, which in turn was acquired by Pernod Ricard in 2005. The majority of Glenburgie’s production goes into the Ballantine’s blend, making single malt bottlings rare.
