The Hampden Estate, established in 1753, is one of Jamaica’s oldest distilleries. Hampden produces a number of different distillates with varying profiles. These are known as marks or marques, and are typically indicated by ester level. This tasting set includes eight 20cl bottles, exploring the different marks the distillery has to offer—all the way from the light and aromatic OWH to the heavy and intense DOK. The lightest mark, OWH, is also one of the newest. It was created in the early 2010s by the Hussey family, and has an ester content of 40-80 gr/HLPA. Another new mark is LFCH, which develops a complex balance of many different esters through a longer fermentation and has an ester level of 80-120 gr/HLPA. LROK, or Light Rum Owen Kelly, is a historical mark created in the late 19th century. It has an ester content of 200-400 gr/HLPA. Getting into the higher ester profiles we have HLCF (Hampden Light Continental Flavoured), a high ester but balanced rum with an ester content of 400-600 gr/HLPA. Diamond H brings intense flavours of ripe bananas and pineapples, and has an ester content of 900-1000 gr/HLPA. HGML (Hampden George MacFarquhar Lawson) was originally intended for blending on export markets. This mark has a high level of aromatic concentration and more intensity. C Diamond H is a rare mark due to its extreme intensity. It has a high ester count of 1300-1400 gr/HLPA. All the way at the top we have DOK (Dermot Owen Kelly-Lawson), which reaches the maximum legal limit of high ester rum at an astonishing 1500-1600 gr/HLPA. It is the highest ester rum made in all of Jamaica.
