Hanyu is one of Japan’s fabled closed distilleries. It was founded in 1941 by Isouji Akuto, 19th-generation member of a famous sake producing family going back to the 1600s. In 1980, Hanyu began distilling a Scotch-style whisky using two pot stills. Originally the distillery mainly produced whisky for blends, but in 1990 a single malt was launched as well. Unfortunately, this venture didn’t last very long as the distillery was shut down in 2000. This 2000 vintage bottling contains some of the last whisky distilled at the Hanyu distillery. It matured for 16 years and was bottled in 2016 at a cask strength of 56.1%. Hanyu whisky is getting rarer by the day, so get this Hanyu 2000-2016 Cask #362 while you still can!
