The I.W. Harper brand was created by brothers Isaac Wolfe and Bernhard Bernheim back in 1879 but they’d been active in the bourbon game for a bit longer than that. They started with a liquor sales business in Paducah, Kentucky. That was 1872. Then they founded their own distillery in Louisville called the Bernheim Distillery. When that was up and running then the iconic I. W. Harper brand was developed and it quickly proved to be a real hit. It was so successful that even during prohibition they were one of 10 distilleries that was allowed to keep distilling bourbon for ‘medicinal’ purposes. What a great loophole! I.W. Harper Gold Medal 86 Proof comes in the iconic crystal decanter bottle at 86 proof, probably from sometime in the 1960s. Just perfect for all your “medicinal” needs!
