Fun fact! Schenley branded their I.W. Harper as a household bourbon. Their famous and hospitable Bowing Man was the company’s supporting logo for many years, until United Distillers (currently Diageo), the later owner of the brand, gradually left him out of advertisement altogether. This early-90s Japanese export is likely one of the last bottlings that features the I.W. Harper Bowing Man. It’s also likely one of the last batches that was made at the Old Bernheim distillery, as United Distillers built the New Bernheim Distillery in 1992 and moved production there. The Old Bernheim distillery became Heaven Hill after the Old Heaven Hill distillery burned down in an immense fire in 1996. The I.W. Harper brand was launched in 1879 by Isaac and Bernard Bernheim. The brand is named after Isaac, whose initials were I.W., but he did not use his last name for the brand. He chose a name that sounded more American. In the 1980s, Schenley decided to discontinue I.W. Harper for the domestic market, and for over 30 years the bourbon was produced solely for the Japanese market.
