The Gold Medal mentioned in the name of this I.W. Harper Gold Medal Pint 1970s, refers to the very prestigious awards I.W. Harper won back in the early days of the brand. It was founded by the Bernheim brothers back in the 1870s, but instead of using their real surname, it was thought that the name ‘Harper’ would be more marketable. The I.W. bit comes from the initials of one of the brothers, Isaac Wolfe. The Harper name stuck and soon the whiskey was winning some prestigious awards including gold, at the 1885 New Orleans Exhibition, and then at the 1893 Chicago World Fair. This bottle comes from the Schenley days back in the 70s. In 1987 Schenley was bought out by United Distillers, who discontinued the brand in the United States. A modern version was bought out by Diageo in 2015, but unlike this dusty old bottle, the newer version is not distilled at Bernheim.
