When Joseph Washington Dant started distilling whiskey in the 1830s, he was completely broke and couldn’t afford a proper still. He famously hollowed out a log and started using it as a log still, or so the story was passed on. When the popularity of his bourbon grew, J.W. Dant bought a copper still and established the first Dant distillery. In 2021, descendants of J.W. Dant opened the Log Still distillery, paying homage to their family’s distilling legacy. This 7-year-old Kentucky Sour Mash bourbon whiskey was distilled by Schenley at the Gethsemane Distillery, and bottled in the 1960s of 70s at their plant in Aladdin, PA. It was exported to the French market.
