The Old Pepper was founded in 1776, the same year as the Declaration of Independence was written. Its founder’s grandson, Kentucky Colonel James E. Pepper, built a new distillery in Lexington in the 1800s and placed his name above the entrance. It was later bought by whiskey giant Schenley. Like many great distilleries, it fell into decline in the 1900s. Although James E. Pepper survived Prohibition, declining sales in the 1950s forced them to close down. Fifty years later, entrepreneur Amir Peay bought the distillery site and relaunched the historic James E. Pepper brand. This 15-year-old rye was sourced from Seagram’s in Lawrenceburg, known today as MGP. Get your well aged rye on!
