A dusty James E. Pepper bourbon, distilled at the original Lexington distillery before it closed in 1958! After the James E. Pepper Distillery closed, other companies bought up the remaining stocks and started bottling the bourbon. Because making new labels and getting them approved was an expensive business, the whiskey was released using the standard James E. Pepper labels. This bottle is labeled as a six-year-old, even though it was bottled in or around 1968, which would make it at least 10 years old. It’s not uncommon for bourbon from this period to be significantly older than the label states. James E. Pepper is one of the oldest whiskey brands in America. The original Old Pepper distillery was founded in 1776, the same year as the Declaration of Independence was written. A century later, Colonel James E. Pepper (the grandson of the original founder) built a new distillery in Lexington, Kentucky. The distillery was very successful before prohibition, but fell into decline in the 1950s and was closed in 1958. Fifty years later, entrepreneur Amir Peay bought the distillery site and relaunched the historic James E. Pepper brand.
