This triple distilled single barrel bourbon from the A. Smith Bowman Distillery in Virginia commemorates the great-great uncle of distillery founder Abram Smith Bowman. The bourbon has no age statement but is rumored to be around 9 or 10 years old, and is bottled at 100 proof. In 2017, John. J. Bowman was named ‘World’s Best Bourbon’ at the World Whiskies Awards. John J. Bowman Single Barrel Virginia Straight Bourbon Whiskey has a herbal nose with aromas of honey, caramel, figs and leather. The palate is creamy with notes of chocolate, oak, toffee, caramel, apples and spices. The finish is long and hot with herbs, chocolate, spices and coffee. The A. Smith Bowman Distillery was founded in 1934, making it the first legal whiskey distillery in Virginia. The company moved to Fredericksburg in 1988, where it continues to operate as a small craft distillery. The distillery has been in the hands of Sazerac since 2003. A. Smith Bowman currently does not produce its own distillate: the company sources new make from sister distillery Buffalo Trace, and then re-distills it in its unique copper still.
