Johnny Drum is a bit of an underdog in the whiskey world (unjustly, if you ask us). There is a legendary story behind the brand’s name: Johnny Drum was a boy from Kentucky who wanted to fight in the American Civil War. Because he was too young, he was made a drummer boy in the army instead. After the war, he returned home and started distilling whiskey. His determination led to the creation of an exceptional bourbon. Private Stock is one of the distillery’s three labels (the others are Black Label and Green Label). It lost its 15-year age statement over time, but we estimate it is somewhere between 10 and 15 years old. Johnny Drum Private Stock is a hidden gem! Johnny Drum is owned by Willett, but bottled under the Johnny Drum Distilling Company name, so this is a sourced bourbon of undisclosed origin. Loads of caramel and vanilla come first, saturating the senses with a intensity that hugs the tongue. But there is not too much hugging going. Bursts of tobacco and leather follow right after, for some not too subtle kink. Can you taste it yet?
