Kilkerran Work In Progress 5 Bourbon Wood

Campbeltown was once a bustling whisky town, boasting 34 distilleries and the title “Whisky Capital of the World.” This was back in the 19th century when whisky was a booming business, but things declined in the 20th century and by 1925 all but two distilleries were closed. One of these that closed was William Mitchell’s Glengyle distillery and while production ceased, the buildings on the site were still in pretty good shape. So when Mitchell’s great-great nephew came along and bought them in 2000, the time was ripe for another distillery venture. While the pigeons who had taken over the building and had to be cleared out might not agree, we think this was an excellent move and it has resulted in some great drams like this Kilkerran Work In Progress 5 Bourbon Wood. This release is actually a pair of whiskies, with the sister whisky being aged in Sherry Casks. Both are available thanks to Must Have Malts. The Bourbon Wood has a nose of lemon sherbert, honey, licorice and wax. The palate is rounded with caramel, wood, spice and brown sugar. The finish is buttery with licorice and charred wood.
