The whisky boom of the late 19th-century caused new distilleries to pop up all over Scotland which unfortunately attracted the attention of some less reputable people. The Pattison brothers were dairy farmers turned whisky merchants with a flair for advertising. One of their stunts was to train up 500 grey parrots to squark “Buy Pattison’s Whisky” and then give these parrots as gifts to local grocers so they’d squark the message in shops all over the place. Unfortunately not all their stunts were as cute and they soon ended up in prison for illegal business practices. The whisky bubble they helped create then burst and like many other distilleries Knockando went bust. It was resurrected by W & A Gilbey which merged with various companies including Justerini & Brooks in the 1960s. The Knockando 11 Years Old 1969 dates from this time. Aged in oak casks, this fine single malt has a signature mellow quality and rich flavour.
