The name Knockando comes from the Gaelic for ‘little black hill’, which is probably a reference to the hills that the distillery sits in between. It was one of the few survivors of the Pattison Crash in the late 19th century. This whisky bubble was pumped up by people like the Pattison Brothers, who had a whole bag of tricks to promote their whisky, such as training up 500 grey parrots to squark “Buy Pattison’s Whisky.” They then gave these parrots as gifts to local grocers so they’d squark the message in shops all over the place. This sounds cute, but they were also involved in a few illegal practices as well and all this contributed to the boom going bust. Knockando is now owned by Diageo and this bottle comes to us under the Diageo Special Releases label. Knockando 25 Years Old Diageo Special Releases 2011 has a nose of blueberries, blackberries, orange and cinnamon. The palate displays chocolate, nuts, tobacco, leather with red fruits and oak. The finish is medium long with chocolate, mulled wine, black tea and pepper.
