Laphroaig 10 Years Old Original Cask Strength has a strong nose of smoke, earth, salt and seaweed. The palate is nice and oily with peat, iodine and barbecue flavours while the finish is long with sweet and spicy notes along with a bold peat flavour. This is the so called Red Stripe edition, one of the earliest releases in the range that now has batch numbers. The name Laphroaig supposedly comes from Gaelic for ‘the hollow of Broadbay’ and it’s at this location on the south of Islay that brothers Donald and Alexander Johnstone set up their distillery in 1815. Previously the land was used to raise cattle, with the barley being grown to make cattle feed. But with excess barley came whisky and soon the whisky game became more profitable for the brothers than the cattle game. Even back then Laphroaig had a reputation for being the best of the best. These days it is the only whisky to have the Royal Warrant of the Prince of Wales and we hear whispers that it’s actually his favourite brand of whisky.
