Laphroaig 33 Years Old Strong Characters Chapter One Donald Johnston is the first release in a new series that celebrates those who have shaped Laphroaig. Strong Characters Chapter One tells the story of Donald Johnston, the older of two brothers who founded the Laphroaig distillery in 1815. His resolve and resilience deserve an extraordinary single malt: this 33-year-old whisky, with illustrations by award-winning British artist Bill Bragg, has a complex character bringing notes of sweet desserts, gentle sherry and savoury peat smoke all together in perfect harmony. A long maturation in American oak ex-bourbon casks and European oak sherry-seasoned hogsheads has brought new depth to Laphroaig’s iconic character. Laphroaig 33 Years Old Strong Characters Chapter One Donald Johnston offers notes of crème brûlée, stewed rhubarb and apple with custard. Creamy soft fudge is followed by heather honey, freshly baked sourdough bread and a briny sea spray. The gentle sherry influence has added notes of fruit cake and subtle spice. The peat element reveals savoury aromas of smoked ham, cured mackerel, and a herbal, almost grassy smoke. A splash of water brings forth billowing peat smoke.
