Here we have the Holy Trinity of cask maturation. This Macallan 10 Years Old Fine Oak has been matured in not one, not two, but three exceptional barrels for maximum smoothness and complexity. The barrels are European Oak sherry casks, American Oak sherry casks and American Oak bourbon casks. The name Macallan comes from a combination of two Gaelic words – “magh” meaning fertile ground and “Ellan” after the church of St. Fillan which was located on the Macallan lands. Obviously the magh part of the name was accurate because the land was so fertile that farmers had been distilling whisky from their leftover barley for hundreds of years. The nose of Macallan 10 Years Old Fine Oak buzzes with honey, fruit and heather while the palate is soft with a malty character. This is balanced with oak and fruit. The finish is long with the oak and fruit making a return.
