Macallan comes from a combination of two Gaelic words – ‘magh’ meaning fertile ground and ‘Ellan’ after the church of St. Fillan which was located on the Macallan lands. The Macallan lands were certainly fertile since they frequently produced an oversupply of barley. And what do you do with extra barley? If you’re in Scotland, you make whisky! From humble beginnings as a farm still Macallan has grown to be the third best-selling malt in the world! No wonder bottlers Gordon and Macphail wanted to celebrate the Macallan brand with their Speymalt series. Macallan Speymalt Gordon & MacPhail 1999-2008 has a malty nose with mint, smoke and caramel. The palate shows orange, spice, sherry, honey and almonds. The finish is long with fruit and a touch of smoke.
