In the late 18th century, the McAfee brothers were some of the first Europeans that settled at the site where Buffalo Trace stands today, just north of Frankfort. They left surveyor’s benchmarks as guides for the settlers that followed—hence the name of this bourbon created in their honour. The Benchmark brand was introduced by Seagram in 1968, and has been made at Buffalo Trace ever since Sazerac took over the brand in 1989. McAfee’s Benchmark is bottled at 80 proof and comes in an old school dumpy bottle.
