Oban is the second smallest distillery within the Diageo stable. With only two pot stills, the distillery has a modest production capacity of 870,000 litres per year. Oban’s first single malt appeared in 1979. In collaboration with the blending company John Hopkins & Co, Oban 12 Years Old was brought to the market. In 1988, Oban was put in the spotlight when United Distillers included the distillery’s 14-year-old single malt in the original Classic Malts. Oban is located right on the border between the West Highlands and the Hebrides, and flavour-wise the distillery’s single malt falls between the dry, smoky style of the islands and the lighter, sweeter malts of the Highlands. Oban 12 Years Old John Hopkins is a rare early release of the distillery’s first single malt. The whisky comes in the iconic octagonal glass decanter, and was exported to the German market.
