When’s the last time you had Stitzel-Weller Rip Van Winkle? Don’t be ashamed if you say ‘never’, as 99.9% of the people will likely answer the same… It’s fabled whiskey from yesteryear that’s definitely worth the attention though! The bourbon in this bottle was technically made in the Old Fitzgerald Distillery, but it was given that name by the proprietors who took over the site from the Van Winkles in 1972. Pappy Van Winkle famously started the Stitzel-Weller distillery in 1935 with two business partners. When the distillery was sold, Pappy’s grandson Julian III was allowed to select bourbon there for his Rip Van Winkle brand. Bottled in 1994 (or just after), this is a true unicorn.
