Old Rip Van Winkle was a pre-Prohibition bourbon label that was revived in the 1970s, by the Van Winkles after they had to sell their Stitzel-Weller distillery. The new owners of Stitzel-Weller allowed Julian Van Winkle II to retain an office at the distillery, and they bottled his whiskey for him. After he died, however, this courtesy was not extended to his son. Julian III then moved the bottling operation to the Old Hoffman distillery in Lawrenceburg, which he renamed Old Commonwealth. Stitzel-Weller closed in 1992, and in 2002 Julian III moved the production of Old Rip Van Winkle to Buffalo Trace. Initially the distillery bottled the remaining Stitzel-Weller stock, but eventually it was replaced with Buffalo Trace distillate. This 2011 release of the Old Rip Van Winkle 10 Years Old comes in the iconic dumpy bottle.
