The short-lived Speyside distillery Pittyvaich was in operation for no more than two decades. Built in 1974 on the site of the Dufftown distillery, Pittyvaich provided a fruity and characterful spirit for blends. The distillery closed in 1993 and was eventually demolished 10 years later. Just a handful of official single malts were ever released, and the distillery’s remaining casks occasionally get bottled up by independent bottlers. For the 2015 edition of their Special Releases, Diageo released a limited-edition bottling of this rare single malt. The whisky was distilled in 1989 and matured for 25 years in first-fill and refill bourbon casks (that’s longer than the distillery existed!), before being bottled at a natural cask strength of 49.9%. Pittyvaich 25 Years Old Diageo Special Releases 2015 has aromas of nuts, Christmas cake, soy, cereals and a touch of tobacco, while the palate brings notes of dark fruits, cereals, raspberries, hops and some green apple. The finish is aromatic and drying.
