Port Ellen 18 Years Old Douglas Laing Old Malt Cask 1982 is a rare single cask Port Ellen, distilled less than a year before the distillery was shut down. The whisky was drawn from a single sherry cask filled in September 1982, and bottled in August 2001 at 50% ABV. Douglas Laing released just 777 bottles as part of their Old Malt Cask range. The Port Ellen distillery on Islay was established in the 1820s. At first it operated solely as a malt mill but a few years later it was developed into a distillery. Port Ellen was mothballed in 1983, although its malting is still in operation to this day and supplies all other Islay distilleries. Diageo announced in 2017 that it is planning to reopen the distillery in the next few years. Since its closure, Port Ellen has become one of the most sought-after whiskies in the world. Increasingly rare, spirit produced at the distillery demonstrates some of the finest character found on the island of Islay.
