This beauty is a 40-year-old single malt from the long-closed Port Ellen distillery on Islay. It was distilled in December 1979 and matured in refill butt #DL13800 for 40 long and beautiful years. In January 2020 it was bottled at a cask strength of 49.6% by Douglas Laing for their high-end XOP The Black Series. Only 299 bottles have been released. The Port Ellen distillery was established in the 1820s. At first it operated solely as a malt mill but a few years later it was developed into a distillery. Port Ellen was mothballed in 1983, although its malting is still in operation to this day and supplies all other Islay distilleries. Diageo announced in 2017 that it is planning to reopen the distillery in the next few years.
