The Port Ellen distillery on Islay was founded in the 1820s and sadly shut down in 1983. It has since turned into a true cult distillery, and the increasingly scarce bottlings of Port Ellen are always in high demand. Port Ellen 23 Years Old Douglas Of Drumlanrig 1983 was distilled not long before Port Ellen closed, and was bottled after 23 years as a single cask by independent bottler Douglas of Drumlanrig. On the nose it has aromas of menthol, iodine, earthy smoke, lemongrass, coffee beans, light honey and anise. The palate is rather sweet with notes of honeydew melon, green apples, herbal honey and liquorice supported by iodine and salty sea water. The finish is long with lingering sweet smoke.
