If you travelled back in time to 1983 and told the owners of Port Ellen that their single malt would one day be among the most sought-after whiskies in the world, they would never believe you. At the time, Port Ellen’s peated whisky was mainly used for blending and there was not much interest in it as a single malt. The distillery was shut down in May 1983 following decreased demand. Despite being little-known during its lifetime, Port Ellen has greatly risen in popularity in recent years and is now Scotland’s most famous lost distillery. Port Ellen 24 Years Old The Whisky Fair 1982 is an independent bottling for The Whisky Fair. The whisky was distilled in October 1982, just months before Port Ellen closed, and matured for 24 years in a sherry butt. It was bottled in May 2007 at 59.6%. Only 509 bottles were released.
