The Port Ellen distillery on Islay was founded in the 1820s and sadly shut down in 1983. It has since turned into a true cult distillery, and the increasingly scarce bottlings of Port Ellen are always in high demand. Port Ellen 30 Years Old Malts Of Scotland 1982 Cask #12017 is an independent bottling from Malts of Scotland in Germany. This Port Ellen was distilled in February 1982 and matured for 30 years in sherry hogshead #12017. It was bottled in April 2012 at 58.6%. Port Ellen 30 Years Old Malts Of Scotland 1982 Cask #12017 has a gentle nose with elegant fruit aromas and light peat, joined by old leather, tobacco, lemon, seaweed, camphor and pepper. The palate is powerful and opens with an explosion of pepper and oily peat smoke. This is followed by notes of tobacco, lime, seaweed, dark chocolate, camphor and liquorice on a background of sea salt. The finish is very long with lingering peat smoke, orange zest, salt and white pepper.
