Port Ellen 39 Years Old Untold Stories 1978 is one of the oldest Port Ellens ever bottled. This rare official bottling, dubbed The Spirit Safe, was released in 2019 by Diageo. The single malt was distilled in 1978 and matured for almost four decades in refill European sherry and ex-bourbon casks. It was bottled in 2018 at a natural cask strength of 50.9%. Each bottle is presented in a wooden display box with a double key opening mechanism, a reference to the spirit safe that was installed at Port Ellen in the 1820s—the first distillery to try out this device. Just 1500 bottles have been released.
