Red Spot is a single pot still Irish whiskey, triple distilled from both malted and unmalted barley. It matured for 15 years in three different casks: American bourbon barrels, Spanish sherry butts, and Sicilian marsala wine casks. Red Spot is part of Mitchell & Son’s Spot Whiskeys range, which has its origins in 19th century Irish whiskey bonding. The Mitchells matured whiskey from the local Jameson Distillery in cellars under the streets of Dublin. To indicate how long the barrels would be matured for, they were each marked with a spot of paint: blue for 7 years, green for 10 years, yellow for 12 years and red for 15 years. Green Spot is the only one of the Spot Whiskeys that has remained in continuous production since its conception. Red Spot was discontinued in the 1960s, but was relaunched in 2018.
