Back before trains and trucks were invented, the main way for getting things around was by boat, which resulted in a huge number of canals being built all around the UK. The Forth and Clyde Canal was built between Glasgow and Edinburgh in 1790 and there are some records that distilleries popped up along the banks, perhaps to serve a dram to the sailors as they glided by. Apparently a lot of roses grew along the banks which is where the name Rosebank comes from…pretty straightforward right? Rosebank was regarded as the King of the Lowland whiskies for many years, but sadly it was mothballed in 1993. There was always talk about reviving the distillery, but when metal thieves stole the original stills, it seemed like that was the end for Rosebank. BUT, luckily Ian Macleod has made it its mission to bring Rosebank back to life in a project nicknamed the Rosebank Renaissance! While this promising venture gets going, we are lucky that we can enjoy this old style Rosebank 17 Years Old Signatory Vintage 1974. Bottled just a year before the mothballing, this is Rosebank at its peak. It is a marriage of three casks, 5061-5063, aged for 17 years and bottled up by Signatory Vintage. This is a rare old Rosebank, a reminder of an incredible past and hopefully now, a very bright future.
