The story behind this S.S. Politician Whisky Galore Blended Scotch is so cool, that they made not one, but two fims about it: Whisky Galore in 1949 and a remake in 2016. The plotline is as follows: a ship wrecks off the coast of a fictional Scottish island. The people living there have run out of whisky because of wartime rationing, but lo and behold: the ship is full of the good stuff! They maraud the wreck and try to hide it from local customs and excise men.
This story really happend. The S.S. Politition nearly sank off the coast of Eriskay, on February 5, 1941. The cargo included 22,000 cases of malt whisky and 3 million pounds worth of Jamaican banknotes. Much of the whisky was recovered by the Eriskay islanders, contrary to marine salvage laws. Because no duty had been paid on the whisky, members of HM Customs and Excise pursued and prosecuted those who had removed the cargo. If they were able to track it down… A well organized team of divers in the 1980’s found some perfect bottles on the wreck, and these have been blended with undisclosed Scotch by Douglas Laing in 1990. The result…. The S.S. Politician Whisky Galore Blended Scotch.
How can you not want this whisky, now you know its story?
