The designation AOC, or Appellation d’origine Contrôlée, protects the quality of regional agricultural products such as wine, cheese and meat. Each AOC identifies the unique qualities belonging to a defined geographical area, known as the terroir. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Martinique AOC designation, the only AOC outside Europe, Velier has launched a vertical collection of ten millésimes (or vintages) from the Saint James Distillery. The very dry season of 1998 resulted in an optimal sugar cane harvest, in regard to both quality and quantity. Saint-James 1998 Velier 25th AOC Anniversary is a mature rum with sweet fruit notes. The nose starts out sweet with a woody, spicy backdrop of forest undergrowth, moorland and cinnamon. Aromas of dried figs, prunes, mocha and chocolate then come to the fore. The wood is more noticeable on the palate, revealing notes of mocha, dried fruit and nuts, with hints of nutmeg and prune.
