An AOC, or Appellation d’origine Contrôlée, is a French label for agricultural products that protects the distinctive qualities of a certain region of origin. It is most famously used for wine and cheese. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Martiniquan AOC designation, the only AOC outside Europe, legendary Italian independent bottler Velier has released a vertical collection of ten millésimes (or vintages) from the Saint James Distillery. In 2002, the sugarcane was harvested in a fairly rainy climate, bringing out the fresh sugar from the newly distilled rum. Saint-James 2002 Velier 25th AOC Anniversary has a very lively nose with cinnamon and nutmeg on a background of passion fruit and pineapple. Aromas of tobacco leaves and a potpourri of dried flowers then arise. The palate brings flavours of walnut, nutmeg, roasted coffee, blond tobacco and candied fruit.
