The French label Appellation d’origine Contrôlée (AOC) is used to identify the distinctive and traditional qualities of the protected designations of origin of agricultural products such as wines, cheeses, meats and spirits. In 1996 the general manager of the Saint James Distillery in Martinique, Jean-Claude Benoit, created the first AOC outside Europe. In honour of the Martiniquan AOC’s 25th anniversary, Italian indie bottler Velier has released a celebratory series consisting of ten Saint James vintages. The 2004 harvest was abruptly halted due to heavy May rain, leading to one of the lowest yields of recent years. Saint-James 2004 Velier 25th AOC Anniversary has a very sweet nose. The palate, in contrast, is dominated by lively spices and roasted hazelnuts, joined by notes of walnuts, licorice, dried banana and coffee.
