The designation AOC, or Appellation d’origine Contrôlée, protects the quality of regional agricultural products such as wine, cheese and meat. Each AOC identifies the unique qualities belonging to a defined geographical area, known as the terroir. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Martiniquan AOC designation, the only AOC outside Europe, Velier has launched a vertical collection of ten millésimes (or vintages) from the Saint James Distillery. The harvest in 2015 was initially rather difficult, followed by a favourable climate producing great yields. Saint-James 2015 Velier 25th AOC Anniversary has a very intense nose whose woodiness harmonizes with aromas of cinnamon, cocoa and gentle fruit. The palate is smooth and initially brings notes of mocha and chocolate, followed by fig, baked fruit and candied fruit zest. Hints of cinnamon and fern show up in the background. The finish is very long and gentle.
