Springbank is one of the grandest of the grand old whisky distilleries. These days it is one of only three distilleries left in Campbeltown, which used to boast over 30 distilleries at its peak. In the 1980s the decision was made to focus on single malt production instead of blends and boy we’re glad they made this decision. Springbank 12 Years Old Cask Strength Batch 12 is a mix of 65% sherry cask aged whisky and 35% bourbon cask aged whisky all bottled up at a punchy cask strength of 54.1% ABV. It has a nose of herbs, light peat, malt, peach and apricot. The palate is deliciously oily and brings us a sprinkling of salt and pepper, a plume of smoke, dried apricots, chocolate and vanilla. The finish is long with stronger pepper and smoke notes, sherry and dry wood.
