Campbeltown, located on the Kintyre peninsula, was once home to over 30 distilleries. It was known as ‘the whisky capital of the world’, but most distilleries sadly went out of business following Prohibition and the Great Depression in the United States. Springbank, founded in 1828 by the Mitchell family, is one of the distilleries keeping Campbeltown whisky alive. Independent bottler Meadowside Blending has released a single cask whisky from this unique distillery as part of their Maltman range. Springbank 20 Years Old Maltman 1997 Cask #290 was distilled in April 1997 and matured for 20 years in sherry cask #290. It was bottled in September 2017 at 55.8%. On the nose you’ll find aromas of roasted nuts, sherry and a little gun powder. The palate has notes of Seville orange marmalade, pecan pie, cigar and honey roast ham, leading to a lovely peppery finish with some subtle sherry and smoky liquorice.
