The thistle isn’t just a pretty spiky flower that you see around Scotland. At one point it even saved Scotland from an invading Norse army. The Vikings had been raiding Scotland for years, but on one occasion they tried to sneak up on the Scottish army camp at night. All was going well and the Viking army crept closer and closer. Unfortunately for them, the idea to go in barefoot was not so clever, as one soldier stood on a spiky thistle and let out a big yelp. This alerted the Scottish sentries who sounded the alarm in time for the Scots to form up and beat the Vikings back to their longboats. The thistle has been the emblem of Scotland ever since, and Springbank 12 Years Old Green Thistle is the perfect tribute to this spiky little saviour. It has an earthy nose with prune, fig and fruitcake. The palate shows licorice, sherry, blackcurrant with a salty sea breeze. The finish is long and herbal with leather, earth, cherry, dates and raisins.
