When a rival distiller tried to paint Springbank in a bad light for temporarily suspending production in 2008, the distillery knew just how to respond. The managing director of Bruichladdich was quoted to have called this “an odd decision from a very odd bunch of people”. When Springbank restarted production in 2009, they held a competition asking their fans what they thought ODD might stand for. The winner was ‘Original, Distinct, Defiant’, which became the name of a limited-edition range of single cask bottlings to celebrate the reopening of the distillery. Springbank ODD Cask Light Rum #13 matured in light rum cask #13, and was bottled in 2011 at 59.2%. The single malt is fruity and grassy on the nose, with hints of fudge and Oddfellows. The palate is dry and salty at first, before flavours of bubblegum, lemon and molasses develop. Citrus and sweetness linger on the finish.
