Another awesome rum from a closed distillery. Uitvlugt, like Caroni, is no longer producing rum, but bottlers like That Boutique-y Rum Company or Velier are making sure that we can get hold of the remaining stock. This That Boutique-y Rum Company was distilled in the Port Mourant still: a double wooden pot still that originated from the Port Mourant Estate, founded in 1732. It was later moved first to Uitvlught and then, in 2000, to Diamond. It’s one out of two original wooden pot stills that are still in use; both are over 250 years old. How cool is that? (answ.: very).
Here’s what the people from TBRC say about how to pronounce ‘Uitvlucht’: ‘You see the flute on the label, yeah? It’s got a pair of eyeglasses somehow attached to it. Eye. Flute. Eye-flute. Uitvlugt.’
We say NO. It’s not eye flute, you silly people. We’re Dutch, you can take our word on it. The G in ‘Uitvlugt’ is pronounced in a way we can only describe as the sound your grammy makes when she’s choking in her own dentistry. We know, it’s horrible, but that’s speaking Dutch for ya.
