Renowned whisky producer Whyte & Mackay can trace its roots back to 1844, when the Glasgow-based warehousing firm Allan & Poynter was established. James Whyte and Charles Mackay met while working here and formed a partnership. When Allan & Poynter’s owner died in 1881, the pair took over the company and renamed it Whyte & Mackay. They chose to focus on blended whisky and quickly launched their own proprietary blend, the Whyte & Mackay Special. In 2019, Whyte & Mackay celebrated its 175th anniversary. In honor of this momentous occasion, a competition was held. The prize? An extremely rare 50-year-old blended whisky. 175th Anniversary edition is made up of whiskies matured for at least half a century in a plethora of casks. Including ex-bourbon barrels, Matusalem Oloroso sherry butts, Apostles Palo Cortado sherry butts and a single Tawny Port pipe. The expression was named best Blended Scotch 40 Years & Over in Jim Murray’s 2021 Whisky Bible, and won a gold award at the 2020 International Spirits Challenge. Only 1500 bottles were given away, as the whisky was never for sale on the open market; making it highly coveted by collectors.
