In 1992, Wild Turkey removed the age statement from their flagship 8-year-old bourbon and replaced it with the confusingly named Old No. 8 Brand. This early release of Wild Turkey Old No. 8 Brand was bottled in 1993 at the lower than usual strength of 86.8 proof. Wild Turkey was created after Thomas McCarthy, an executive for bourbon wholesaler Austin Nichols, brought some warehouse samples with him on a wild turkey hunting trip. The bourbon was so popular among his friends that they continued to ask him for ‘that wild turkey bourbon’, and so the iconic brand was born.
