South African Rum

While the Caribbean is usually the first thing that comes to mind when talking about rum, South Africa knows a vibrant craft rum scene. The country produces about 20 million tons of sugarcane each year, making it one of the largest sugar producers in the world. South Africa left the distillation of rum to other countries for a long time, but the number of microdistilleries is growing fast and South African rum is making its way to the world stage. Mhoba, founded in 2015, produces a unique farm-to-bottle rum made from pure sugarcane juice.
