Taiwanese Whisky

Taiwan is the third largest market for single malt whisky, ranking only behind the United States and France. Even so, the country is a novice when it comes to whisky production. Up until 2002, the Taiwanese government had a monopoly on producing alcohol. Taiwan’s first private distillery, Kavalan, was established in 2005. Taiwanese whisky was put on the map when, in January 2010, Kavalan’s single malt beat out three Scotches and one English whisky during a blind tasting in honor of Burns Night. On top of that, the Kavalan Solist Vinho Barrique was named the world’s best single malt whisky at the 2015 World Whiskies Awards. Since the alcohol monopoly was lifted, Taiwanese whisky has been taking its place in the world of spirits.
