Tormore Distillery
The Tormore distillery was founded in 1958 by Schenley International in order to produce whisky for their Long John blend. It was the first new distillery to be built in Speyside after the whisky boom of the 1890s. Tormore comes from the Gaelic ‘Torra Mhoir’, meaning ‘the big hill’. The distillery was bought by Allied Domecq in 1989. It is now under the ownership of Pernod Ricard, after Chivas Brothers acquired Allied Domecq in 2005. The first official Tormore bottling was released in 1994, but the official range is rather small and independent bottlings are rare. The majority of the production is used in the Ballantine’s blend. Fun fact: the distillery’s clock plays four different Scottish songs each quarter of an hour!
