Uitvlugt Distillery

Uitvlugt is a legendary former distillery in Guyana. It was founded around 1750 and produced a heavy style rum. Over the years, Guyana’s many sugar estates started to close, and by 1970 there were only 11 sugar factories and 4 distilleries left. In 1975, the government started to privatize the remainder of them into one large distillery owned by the Guyana Liquor Corporation. Uitvlugt finally closed in 2000, and its stills were moved to the only remaining distillery in Guyana, the Diamond Distillery.
