A.H. Hirsch Reserve is one of the most legendary bourbons around. Its dramatic history and reputation as being one of the finest bourbons ever produced make it highly sought-after. Adolph Hirsch, a former Schenley executive, commissioned a 400-barrel batch of whiskey at the Pennco Distillery in 1974. He didn’t have any plans for the whiskey, so when the Pennco Distillery (nowadays more commonly known as Michter’s) went bankrupt in 1990, the bourbon had matured for much longer than is customary. A large part of the 16-year-old whiskey was transferred into steel tanks. Hirsch sold his whiskey to the Hue Family from Kentucky, who had Julian Van Winkle III bottle the brand. In 2003, Sazerac acquired the Pappy brands from Julian Van Winkle and bottling for Hirsch moved to Buffalo Trace as well. The Gold Wax bottling was bottled in Lawrenceburg before 2003.
