Barelegs Battle Axe Islay Single Malt is a small-batch single malt from an undisclosed Islay distillery, bottled in 2020 by independent bottler The Islay Boys. The expression is named after Magnus III ‘Barelegs’, an 11th-century Viking king who ruled the islands of Scotland. He got his nickname because he adopted the Highland tradition of the kilt (and thus pranced around with his legs bare). The peaty malt matured in refill bourbon casks and was bottled in November 2020 at 55.7%. This ABV was chosen to represent the bond between the Islay Boys: 55.7°N is the latitude of the midpoint between the villages of Port Charlotte and Portnahaven, where the company’s founders Donald Mackenzie and Mackay Smith come from.
